All Natural Menopause Treatment

My Self Help Club

Today it seems as though every time we turn on the television, we hear yet another report about a drug that was approved for widespread use and is now causing major health problems for many thousands of people…

What is a body to do?

We need medicines, but we most assuredly do NOT need recalls and side effects and all the problems associated with so many modern-day medications…

In response to this growing list of recalled medications, many people are turning to herbal remedies for their ailments.  Actually, herbal remedies are a very good choice.  There are few if any side effects associated with the natural herbal medicines…

Side effects are most often associated with the synthetic versions of the natural remedies.  You almost always need a prescription from a doctor to get one of those synthetic versions of natural remedies.  There is no prescription required for the natural remedy itself and there are very rarely any side effects associated with natural remedies…

There are a great many all natural menopause treatments for the relief of the symptoms of menopause in the form of herbal medicines.  There are herbs that provide natural estrogen replacement without the added risk of breast cancer, like the synthetic estrogen replacement therapies produce…

There are a variety of herbs that will reduce the frequency and the severity of such menopausal symptoms as night sweats and hot flashes.  There are also a great many herbal supplements that help to calm the nerves and reduce the severity of the mood swings associated with menopause…

Menopause is a natural part of the human experience for women.  There isn’t any way around it, so we all have to go through it.  The main objective is to get through menopause without doing our bodies any additional harm as we try to treat the symptoms.  All natural menopause treatments help us to acheive this in the most efficient and effective manner possible.

Causes Of Insomnia

My Self Help Club

What causes insomnia?  Why is it that sometimes we just simply cannot fall asleep, or we fall asleep and a couple of hours later we are wide awake…not rested, of course, just wide awake.  That is a question that has been asked over and over and over again by those who suffer from insomnia…

The reason for the occasional bout with insomnia can sometimes be easily seen.  We have had an exciting day, or we are anticipating an exciting or a stressful day.   Our minds will simply not shut down and let us go to sleep or stay asleep.  We are tense…

Remember Christmas Eve when you were about six years old, and you knew that Santa Claus was going to slide down the chimney and leave you all of the things that you little heart desired?  You couldn’t go to sleep because you were anticipating an event…

Rehashing an event can also keep us awake at night.  An argument with a spouse just before going to bed can add up to a poor night’s sleep for both parties.  These are the common things that can cause all of us to suffer from the occasional sleepless night.

However, there are other more serious causes of insomnia that are not so fleeting.  Constant stress is a major cause. I’m not talking about occasional stress - we all have that.  I’m talking about constant stress - the unrelenting kind…

Insomnia is the symptom.  The real problem is the constant stress, and that is the problem that needs to be addressed.  Taking pills to treat the symptom of insomnia isn’t going to “fix” the problem of undue stress…

When you find a way to relieve the stress, the insomnia will “fix” itself.

There are other physical causes of insomnia.  If you are not under undue stress and yet still have very frequent insomnia, you really should see your doctor and insist on a physical examination to determine the problem that is causing the insomnia.

Herbal and Home Remedy Facts

My Self Help Club

The fact of the matter is that long before what we know as Western Medicine came into being, people have been getting sick and getting well…

Before the corner drug store was ever dreamed of, there were those in every culture who knew which herbs and plants would relieve specific problems…

Way back in the misty past, these people who knew what to do about human physical problems were called shamans, witch doctors, medicine men, and by many other names in ancient cultures worldwide…

Much of today’s modern medicine is based on the same principles used by these ancient healers…

Access to these ancient medicine men was limited at best, and people began to discover for themselves which herbs and plants would relieve pain and provide healing.  Much of today’s modern medicine is also based on the knowledge gained by necessity…

Home remedies are a culmination of knowledge gained by experience, and the experience was gained out of necessity.  Home remedies don’t just come about on a whim - they are based in fact…

Educated people will sometimes scoff at home remedies and dismiss them with a wave of the hand and the words “old wives tale,” usually spoken in a tone of disdain…

Those who are BETTER educated are now using their education to learn about the very real benefits that home remedies offer and the scientific basis for them…

You can bet your bottom dollar that every medical breakthrough has some roots in old home remedies that have been in use for centuries…

Modern science finds the natural ingredients used in effective home remedies and then learns to make them in laboratories…

Once they are made synthetic, the side effects appear that are not present in the use of herbs in their natural state…

Keep checking back for futher posts on this topic…

Back Pain Help

Back Pain Help

My Self Help Club

The one thing that every sufferer of back pain wants is help.  He or she wants relief and they want it sooner rather than later…

Don’t talk to them about any healing process.  They want help.  They want relief.  And they want both NOW!

Those who suffer with back pain can be a tad short-tempered and more than a little irritable.

They want relief and those who must live with them want them to get relief as quickly as possible…

It is no comfort at all to those who are suffering with back pain, but you really aren’t alone.  About 90% of adults will suffer from back pain in their lifetimes.

It is also important to know that your back pain is most likely NOT being caused by a slipped disc…

Slipped discs are the cause of only about 3% of all back pain and there is only a 1-in-1000 chance that your back pain will result in surgery.  The odds are greatly in your favor.

To relieve back pain, try alternating heat and cold on the sorest spot.  Use a heating pad for about five minutes.  Heat helps to improve blood circulation, and the increased blood circulation will relieve pain…

Then, use an ice pack on the same spot for about five minutes. The ice will help to prevent or reduce swelling.

Swelling causes pain, and if it can be reduced, so will the pain.

Draw a nice warm bath and add about a cup of Epson salt to the water.  Soak in the tub and add additional warm water as needed.

The body will absorb magnesium from the Epson salt, and magnesium is a natural muscle relaxant…

Relaxing the muscles that are involved in the pain will help to reduce the pain as well.

So there you have a couple of initial things to try to ease your back pain.  Stay tuned for further posts on this wide-spread issue.

What Is ADD?

 What Is ADD?

My Self Help Club

ADD is an acronym for Attention Deficit Disorder.  Many people believe that this is just a problem that affects children, because we commonly hear about children who have ADD.  In fact, it affects both children and adults, and symptoms may not even appear until adulthood.

ADD affects approximately 5% of the population worldwide.  The medical profession deems ADD a neurological development disorder and it is essentially a problem that makes it hard for the affected person to stay focused on any one thing for even a short period of time.  If one has ADHD (Attention Deficit / Hyperactivity Disorder), they are also hyperactive.

Other symptoms of ADD include forgetfulness, the inability to control impulses, and distractibility.  Currently, there is no cure for ADD, but there are medications that can control the symptoms.

Some children may actually “outgrow” ADD, but about 60% of the children who are diagnosed with ADD do NOT outgrow it.  Studies have also shown that ADD can be inheritable.  In fact, about 75% of all diagnosed cases are inherited. Some cases are believed to be caused by brain injury that occurs right before or right after birth.

There have been over 200 studies that have shown that stimulant medication is the best treatment for ADD.  Many doctors prescribe combinations of medications to control the disorder.  However, medication alone doesn’t cut it.  The patient must also work on behavior modification, make life style changes and attend counseling.

There are skeptics in the medical field as well. Some believe that ADD is not a true disorder.  Some believe that some parents simply don’t want to deal with difficult children, so they have them diagnosed with ADD and medicate them.  With all of the studies that surround ADD, however, this is unlikely.

People with ADD do not pay close attention to details. They often make careless mistakes at school, work, or other activities. They have trouble paying attention to tasks. It will often seem like they are not listening. They often fail to follow instructions, or to finish schoolwork, work tasks, or chores. They have trouble with organizational skills, and often avoid things that take mental effort.

So there you have a very basic introduction to ADD also known as Attention Deficit Disorder.  It’s a condition that can affect children and adults.  A condition that can be ameliorated with both medication and training / conditioning.  Stay tuned for further posts about this topic…

The Who And What Of Acne

My Self Help Club

Acne is an age-old problem.  People have been suffering with acne for centuries.  It isn’t something new that just appeared on the horizon.  If you are suffering from Acne Vulgaris, you are certainly not alone - nor are you the first - and you surely will not be the last…

Just to set the record straight and to provide some information for you about acne here is the who, what and why facts concerning it…

** WHO **

Young people between the ages of 12 and 25 are the ones most often plagued by acne…

However, children as young as five and adults, over 50 years old are not immune and can get acne…

Still, the young are the ones that most often develop acne.

Acne affects both males and females.  Young women will have more frequent out-breaks but young men will have to deal with acne longer usually…

Teenage Acne can and often does continue well into adulthood for men while it most often subsides in women by the time they are into their early twenties.

** WHAT **

Acne is a common skin ailment.  The correct name for it is Acne Vulgaris…and the word
Vulgaris means common rather than vulgar.  There are a multitude of causes for acne…

The most common factor is that with the onset of puberty, the body begins to secret excess male hormones called androgens.  This happens in both males as well as females at puberty…

This excess of hormones causes the body to secrete oil. The oil, which is called “sebum”, makes its way up hair follicles and joins with dead skin cells…

Together they clog up the pores.  When the pores are clogged a bacteria called “Propionibacterium acnes” forms.

The bacteria cause the gland to swell and inflammation to develop.  That is to say, a pimple forms.  In really severe cases, cysts can develop.

So hopefully we have started to set the record straight.  You’ve been given some information about acne - the who, what and why facts concerning it…

As stated above, acne is an age-old problem.  People have been suffering with acne for centuries.  It isn’t something new that just appeared on the horizon.  If you are suffering from Acne Vulgaris, you are certainly not alone…

And don’t dispear, there are ways to help prevent and treat it which we’ll discuss in future posts.  It’s important to define the problem first and then set about solving it in the most efficient manner.  Until then…

5 Self Help Principles

5 Self Help Principles

My Self Help Club

If you go to your favorite search engine and type in “self help” you’ll get thousands of hits with piles of information to sort through and try to make heads or tails out of it all by yourself.  .

We will attempt to simplify the concepts of  self help or self improvement, personal development, or whatever you want to call it.  Here are five self help basics for you to consider…

1.  Alter Your Perspective:
All of us are who we are and we do what we do because of how we think about things.   Because of our experiences and life influences thus far, our minds have learned to respond  or react  to situations and events in a set way…

To change our life, we need to change the way we think about these things.  We need to change our perspective.  This is the foundation for every self help or self  improvement ever conceived.

2.  Approach Life With A Positive Attitude:
Positive thoughts, attitudes and inputs - from any source, including the people we spend time with - will influence our life in a positive way (and yes, negative ones work the same way)…

Our positive thoughts and words about events, other people and especially ourselves will accelerate our transition to a better life.  Positives help produce more positives.  It’s just the way it works.

3.  Recognize Life’s Lessons:
Everybody has a lot to learn about themselves, other people and the world at large…

Life will, without fail, provide us with the opportunity to learn, especially from the uncomfortable events or situations.  It just makes sense to pay attention to the things that are happening to us and learn from them as quickly as possible so we can move on to the next (and perhaps, easier) lesson.

4.  Don’t Fail To ASK:
Question the concepts, principles and “truths” that are prompting you to think, believe - and as a result, ACT - in the way you do…

At least some of the information we have received in our lifetime tends to be misleading and therefore, inhibits our ability to do those things we need to do to move on toward a better, more enjoyable lifestyle…

Be open even to answers that vary considerably from your present viewpoint.  They may hold a key “truth” that will open the doors to a whole new world.

5.  Connect With Your Higher Power:
Tune in to whomever or whatever you believe is your spiritual teacher or mentor.  Listen.  Learn to follow your “gut feelings”…

I am convinced that we are all a part of something far greater than this physical world we experience every day.  And, from what I have seen and experienced, allowing this spiritual realm to play a greater role in our lives, helps immensely with our transition to a happier, more enjoyable life.

So there you have it…five self help basics.  These should give you a framework or a filter to apply to all the information out there on this vast and important topic.  As you learn and research more and more and are moving toward the type of life you desire, I hope these will help simplify and streamline your journey.
